Four years late, but I finally got a chance to watch Manufactured Landscapes, the documentary that follows photographer Edward Burtynsky to China and Bangladesh taking haunting pictures of industrialised landscapes. I cannot recommend this film enough. Even if you think you’ve fairly educated about the environmental and social impact of our own footprint, seeing these photographs and hearing the human voices behind the objects would really catch you off guard realising how deep, massive, and inter-linked the problems are.
As Burtynksy himself reflected, “it’s not a simple right or wrong. It needs a whole new way of thinking.”
